What is a good quote about accountability?

One of the clearest is Winston Churchill's "The price of greatness is responsibility," from his speech at Harvard University on September 6, 1943. Another is the sign Harry Truman kept on his desk: "The buck stops here." Both make the same point: accountability means the decision, and its consequences, end with you.

Quotes about taking responsibility

  1. "The price of greatness is responsibility." — Winston Churchill, speech at Harvard University, September 6, 1943
  2. "The buck stops here." — Sign on President Harry S. Truman's desk in the Oval Office
  3. "The President—whoever he is—has to decide. He can't pass the buck to anybody." — Harry S. Truman, farewell address, January 15, 1953
  4. "Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it." — George Bernard Shaw, Man and Superman (1903), "Maxims for Revolutionists"
  5. "Character—the willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life—is the source from which self-respect springs." — Joan Didion, "On Self-Respect" (1961), collected in Slouching Towards Bethlehem
  6. "I believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation; every possession, a duty." — John D. Rockefeller Jr., radio address, July 8, 1941
  7. "Few things help an individual more than to place responsibility upon him, and to let him know that you trust him." — Booker T. Washington, Up From Slavery (1901)
  8. "There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you." — J.K. Rowling, Harvard commencement address, 2008
  9. "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." — James Baldwin, "As Much Truth As One Can Bear," The New York Times Book Review, 1962

Quotes about owning your choices

  1. "Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does." — Jean-Paul Sartre, Existentialism Is a Humanism (1946)
  2. "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." — Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning
  3. "I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast." — Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning
  4. "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings." — William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar, Act 1, Scene 2

Leadership and ownership quotes

  1. "There are no bad teams, only bad leaders." — Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, Extreme Ownership (2015)
  2. "Discipline equals freedom." — Jocko Willink, Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual (2017)

Willink and Babin's idea of "extreme ownership" is that a leader owns everything in their world, including the mistakes of the people they lead. It is the clearest modern statement of accountability in a team setting.

Stoic and classic quotes on accountability

  1. "Some things are in our control and others not." — Epictetus, Enchiridion, section 1
  2. "No longer talk at all about the kind of man that a good man ought to be, but be such." — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 10, section 16 (George Long translation)
  3. "What the superior man seeks, is in himself. What the mean man seeks, is in others." — Confucius, Analects, Book 15 (James Legge translation)

Bible verses about accountability

  1. "For every man shall bear his own burden." — Galatians 6:5 (KJV)
  2. "So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God." — Romans 14:12 (KJV)

Short accountability quotes for work and teams

For a slide, a team channel or a whiteboard, the shortest lines work best:

If you are using a quote to open a team meeting, pair it with one concrete question, such as "What did we commit to last week, and did we do it?" The accountability partner questions page has forty more.

Which famous accountability quotes are misattributed?

The most common is "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit," usually credited to Aristotle. It was actually written by historian Will Durant in The Story of Philosophy (1926), summarizing Aristotle's ideas. Many other accountability quotes shared online have no traceable source at all, so check before you print one.

A quick test before you use a quote: can you name the book, speech or letter it came from, and the year? If not, it may be a paraphrase or an invention. Wikiquote's "misattributed" sections and the original texts on Project Gutenberg are good places to check.

How do you use accountability quotes well?

Use a quote to open a conversation, not to replace one. A line on a wall does little alone. It works when it is tied to a specific commitment: a weekly check-in, a team agreement, or a partner who asks whether you did what you said. Pick one quote that fits your situation and attach it to a single habit.

If you want a structure for that, see how to take accountability or set up an accountability partner.
