A useful agreement covers six things: each person's goal in verifiable terms, the check-in cadence and time, the channel, what counts as proof, what happens after a miss, and a trial period with an exit clause. Keep it to one page. If either of you can't remember the terms, they're too complicated.
Why write the agreement down?
Writing it down removes the awkward conversations later. When a miss happens, you both already agreed on the response, so nobody has to improvise a lecture or let it slide. It also forces a concrete plan. Research on implementation intentions found that "when X happens, I will do Y" plans improve follow-through.
Source: Gollwitzer, 1999, American Psychologist. The check-in time and miss rules in the template are written in that "when, then" format on purpose.
How strict should the consequences be?
Strict enough that a miss is noticed, mild enough that you'll actually enforce it. A single nudge after one miss and a reset call after two works for most pairs. Add a forfeit, like a small donation your partner chooses, only if you both agree and the goal is measurable enough that a miss can't be argued.
Lab note
The trial period matters more than the forfeit. Agreeing to 30 days, then deciding whether to continue, takes the pressure off picking the "perfect" partner. If it isn't working, you end it on schedule with no hard feelings.
How do you use the template with an AI coach instead of a person?
Fill in the form with your name and "AI coach" as the partner, then copy the agreement into a new chat and ask the AI to follow its terms at each check-in. The AI prompt pack has a setup prompt that does the same thing in a more structured way.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a legal contract?
No. It's a personal agreement between two people. Nothing in it is legally binding, and you shouldn't treat forfeits as debts.
Where is my agreement saved?
Only in your own browser, so it's there if you reload. Use "Clear form" to delete it.
Can I use it for a group?
Yes. Put the group name in the partner field and list each member's goal on its own line. For more structure, see how to run an accountability group.
