What is body doubling?

Body doubling means doing a task while another person is present, in the same room or on a video call, even though they are doing their own work. The other person doesn't help with your task. Their presence is the point: it makes starting easier and drifting off less likely, especially for boring or avoided tasks.

The term is used mostly in ADHD communities and coaching. A session can be as simple as a friend folding laundry while you answer email, or a scheduled video call with a stranger where you both work in silence.

Why does body doubling help with ADHD?

Many people with ADHD report that another person's presence makes it easier to start and keep going, though formal research on body doubling itself is limited. Likely reasons are a gentle sense of being observed, a fixed start time, saying your task out loud, and having someone to report back to at the end.

The closest established research is on social facilitation, the long-studied finding that people often perform simple, well-practiced tasks better when others are present (Zajonc, 1965). That is not the same as proof that body doubling treats ADHD, and it isn't a substitute for care. Treat it as a practical tool worth testing on yourself.

How do you do a body doubling session?

Agree on a start time and a length, usually 25 to 50 minutes. At the start, each person says their task in one specific sentence. Work quietly with cameras on or off, as agreed. At the end, each person says what got done. Keep it short, and book the next session before you leave.

A simple script:

  1. Minute 0: "I'm going to draft the first two sections of the report."
  2. Minutes 1 to 49: Work. No chatting unless you agreed to it.
  3. Minute 50: "I finished section one and half of section two." Then a two-minute break or the next session.

Pick tasks that need starting energy rather than deep collaboration: email, admin, cleaning, studying, writing a first draft.

How do you body double online?

You can body double online by booking a session on a dedicated co-working site, joining a live study or focus room, watching a "study with me" video, or setting up a recurring video call with a friend. Dedicated sites match you with a partner at a set time, which adds the most accountability.

Options by how much accountability they add:

Option How it works Cost
Friend on video Recurring call, both working Free
Focusmate Book a timed video session with a matched partner Free: 3 sessions a week. Plus: $8/mo billed annually or $12/mo monthly
Live focus or study rooms Join an open room with others working Often free
"Study with me" videos A pre-recorded or live stream of someone working Free

Focusmate's prices are from its own pricing page, checked October 30, 2026. Prerecorded videos add the least accountability because nobody notices if you leave.

Is there a body doubling app?

Yes. Several apps and websites are built for body doubling, most often as booked video sessions with a matched partner or open focus rooms. Focusmate is the best known and runs in a web browser. Accountability apps with live check-ins or crews can add a similar sense of being seen across the whole day.

For partner apps that work beyond a single session, see the best accountability partner apps. If you'd rather work with someone you know, how to find an accountability partner online covers where to look.

Can an AI be a body double?

Partly. An AI can't be present the way a person is, but it can play the start and end of a session: ask what you're about to do, set a timer, and check in when it ends. Some people find that structure enough for routine tasks. For tasks you avoid most, a real person usually works better.

The AI accountability prompts include a session prompt you can paste into any chatbot.

Frequently asked questions

Does body doubling work for people without ADHD?

Often, yes. Co-working and study sessions with others are common for anyone who struggles to start dull tasks. The ADHD community popularized the term, but the technique isn't exclusive to it.

Do I have to keep my camera on?

No. Agree on it in advance. Cameras on adds more accountability; cameras off is more comfortable. Many people start with cameras on for the first few minutes, then switch off.

How long should a body doubling session be?

Most sessions run 25 to 50 minutes. Shorter sessions are easier to start; longer ones suit deep work. Stack two short sessions with a break rather than one long one if you lose focus.

Is body doubling the same as an accountability partner?

Not quite. Body doubling is about being present while you work. An accountability partner checks your progress on goals over days and weeks. Many people use both.

Is body doubling free?

It can be. A friend on video costs nothing, and Focusmate's free plan includes three sessions a week. Paid plans add unlimited sessions.
